History Near Home at Soma 788

The West Coast draws both world travelers and Americans. The attraction began with the 1840’s Gold Rush. Today, the appeal has evolved into something more modern.  From the funky food scenes to beautiful beaches and diverse communities, there’s something for everyone. One of San Francisco's best-known landmarks, The Ferry Building, is a quick bus or tram ride, or a half-hour walk, from the Soma 788 apartments.

The Ferry Building, Then

The Ferry Building, which was built in 1898, was San Francisco’s transportation hub. The city could be reached only by ferry until the 1930s. Its stunning clock tower welcomed close to 50,000 daily commuters into San Francisco.

The building survived the 1906 earthquake and served as the main entrance to San Francisco until the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge were completed in 1936 and 1937. Easy access to San Fran by car left the ferries and their building almost empty for years. But the 1950s found the Ferry Building another use as an office space. By 2003, the building had taken on a new role: a bustling and diverse marketplace at the end of Market Street!

The Ferry Building, Now

Over 50 vendors offer goods and services from the Ferry Building seven days a week. So whether you want a waterfront dining experience, that perfect bottle of wine, or local decor to spruce up your new apartment, San Francisco's best-known maritime landmark is a must-visit spot.

In addition, the Ferry Building's beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces are available for private events, making it possible to enjoy your next milestone surrounded by history and elegance in the heart of San Francisco.

Cupid’s Span

South of the Ferry Building is the amazing Cupid’s Span sculpture, featuring a larger than life installation of Cupid’s bow and arrow. Created by contemporary artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, this photo-worthy exhibit is anchored to a grassy hilltop surrounded by lush landscaping and gorgeous views, perfect for your next picnic.
